Heaven Near Hokitika

Believe the 5 Star Reviews! This place is a little slice of heaven on the Tasman Sea near Hokitika. The location is great – only about 20 minutes to Greymouth and the Trans Alpine Train. Elizabeth and Selwyn were born to host and pamper people! We were greeted with warmth and enthusiasm – almost like they’d been waiting for us. The facility and grounds are beautiful and well maintained with a killer view of the Sea. Beds are comfortable and showers have great pressure and hot water. We dined at the Lodge both nights and enjoyed Elizabeth’s perfectly prepared meals; Fish so fresh it had been swimming a few hours earlier, home made pasta with Amatriciana sauce, warm rolls, vegetables from their on site garden, finished with home made ice cream. Breakfast was cooked to order with bacon, sausage, eggs our choice, home made breads and jams. The ride in the amphibious vehicle was great fun! We enjoyed walking on the beach looking for special stones for hours. Overall this place is a perfect part of any west coast New Zealand vacation!

Great place, great hosts!

Selwyn and Elizabeth are amazing hosts, with an equally amazing property! They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and at home. Wonderful breakfast and dinner menus. Top notch! Super comfortable rooms, wonderful bed, and lovely white noise from the Tasman Sea to put you to sleep at night. We arrived as guests, and left as friends, we will most certainly return!

A wonderful 5 nights - perfect for day rides on the wilderness trail

We stayed over Easter for 5 nights. We used Awatuna as our base to do day rides on sections of the Wilderness Trail. It was a perfect spot midway between Hoki and Kumara. Elisabeth and Selwyn are amazing hosts – the setting, the food, evening drinks on the deck, the hot tub and getting to know the other guest all made the stay a fantastic one. This is all capped off with the view of the Tasman Sea and the sunsets…Both Selwyn and Elisabeth are very skilled at ensuring the guests get just the amount of attention they require (or don’t require) and this makes it a relaxing time as you are free to wander the grounds and beach. Highly recommend Awatuna Sunset Lodge.

An absolute treasure

Incredibly welcoming – Elizabeth & Selwyn go out of their way to make you feel welcome – nothing is too much trouble! What a wonderful, delightful time we had staying at their place. I cannot recommend this place highly enough – an absolute treasure! Home cooked food was to die for – breakfast and dinner were superb. You MUST stay here

Beyond our expectations!!

AMAZING! Make this a stop on your trip along the west coast! Elizabeth and Selwyn were insanely accommodating and fantastic hosts. Elizabeth’s cooking was divine – make sure you stay for dinner. And our ride out to the beach with Selwyn in Radar was a true highlight of our vacation

Absolutely Brilliant!! What a Treasure!

Awatuna Sunset Lodge is a wonderful place to stay. Our well appointed room was comfortable and had a spectacular view of the Tasman Sea. Our hosts, Selwyn and Elizabeth, are very warm and caring folks, and went out of their way to ensure we experienced an outstanding stay. The bed (most important) was very comfortable and the morning breakfast exquisite. Elizabeth bakes all her bread and also has her own jams, yogurt, and farm fresh eggs. We enjoyed the outdoor jacuzzi immensely, where we relaxed while watching the sun set over the sea. We especially enjoyed a great ride on the beach with Selwyn and Elizabeth in Selwyn’s 8- wheeler – such fun! We loved our stay at the Awatuna Sunset Lodge; our only regret is that it wasn’t longer!

Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Absolutely perfect! Wonderful hosts. We really loved our 2 night stay so much we didn’t leave at any time during our visit. Elizabeth & Selwyn’s cooking is scrumptious. We had dinner both nights. Breakfast was really good and Elizabeth made to order. The condiments are the best I have had. You have you own private ensuite bathroom. You can wonder down to the river and beach. We loved our relaxing time in the spa. Five stars on everything. Stay as you won’t be disappointed!

Comfortable lodging with A+ hyperlocal dining

The platonic ideal of an family-run B&B, with outstanding access to nature and truly gourmet dining for breakfast and dinner. Our group of five adults loved our stay. Many reviews mention the owner’s cooking talents, but we were still surprised by just how great a chef she is. We felt our meals were the best we had in New Zealand no matter what we ordered (the fish and chips, lamb and lasagna were my personal favorites). Every sauce is homemade, every jam is homemade, the butter is made down the street, the salami as well…hyperlocal without any pretension. The beach is wild and exciting with endless exploration possible. The hot tub is modern and hot. The owners are extremely friendly and hospitable…and impressive! All of this with poor weather during our stay. You should definitely stay here.

We highly recommend Awatuna to everyone for the relaxed atmosphere, scenery and the very friendliness of the hosts

Everything and everyone!!! Elizabeth met us at the door with a great welcome. They grow everything on the property so all the food is very fresh. We relaxed on the lawn with canapés & drinks looking over the Tasman Sea. Selwyn took us down to the beach on his amphibious “thingy” to watch the sunset… spectacular!!

Small paradise on the west coast

It could not be better! Wonderful lodge, everything was very tasteful and well maintained. There is nothing missing, bathrobes, jacuzzi on the terrace, view of the sea from the bed. In addition, really magical hosts. Elizabeth and Selwyn look after every guest unobtrusively but very attentive and make sure that you feel comfortable with nice extras. Particularly noteworthy were Elizabeth’s cooking skills and the fabulous sunset trip to the beach with Selwyn’s amphibian vehicle. For us the best accommodation of our trip so far. Definitely plan two nights, it is worth it.
